The Next Optical Evolution

Since its inception, the use of an all-fiber network has provided many distinct advantages to telecom service providers. Versus copper, fiber’s costs savings, energy savings, and efficiency have proven themselves time and again.

Some of the specific advantages include:

  • Longer lasting with less maintenance
  • Significantly higher bandwidth capacity
  • Access solutions up to 98,000 ft. vs. copper-based, which is 5,000-15,000 ft.
  • Reduction/elimination of central offices for service providers
  • Ability to deliver video, voice, data, and mobile across the same network

As a result of the major benefits, now IT professionals and building owners and managers 500px-Telecom-icon.svgare taking serious note, replacing copper-based cabling with single mode fiber (SMF) and passive Optical LAN architecture, resulting in what many are referring to an “optical revolution.”

Similar to the advantages for telecom providers, for commercial facilities, the 98,000-foot reach saves space, time, and money, while adding better quality and capacity.

This article on the subject calls the network design flexibility of an Optical Network Terminal (ONT) “truly revolutionary for both service providers and commercial enterprise networks.” ONTs, it explains, “are available that can be installed in data centers, MDFs, communication closets, zone boxes, IDFs, on walls, on desks, inside walls, and even inside cubicle raceways.”

According to the article, there are four types of ONTs: one outdoor, and three indoor types, serving 24-port, 4-port, and 2-port gigabit Ethernet with varying mounting options. They can now be installed completely out of sight with remote powering, less equipment, smaller data centers, and more.

Commercial enterprises, according to this article, can and should take advantage of this “copper-to-fiber evolution”, as “the exciting high-performance network designs of the future are emerging.”
